Assignments Editor
Channel Four News require an Assignments Editor to work manage Newsgathering resources & facilities.

This role is initially offered as a six month contract with the potential to become a permanent position.

The Assignments Editor will work with the Planning Editor and Home and Foreign desks and on the day News Editors managing Newsgathering resources and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertaking planning duties including hiring freelance crews, assigning bureau resources and kit efficiently to ensure best use of resources.
  • Entering and maintaining assignment diary entries with all relevant details including phone numbers, address and all associated costs.
  • Ensure liaison throughout the day with the ITV, 5News and ITV Regional news desks to ensure C4 News is across all content and deployments and to avoid duplications in assignments.
  • Preparing accurate daily handovers and newsroom comms.
  • Setting up and assigning teams to next day filming commitments as well as longer term strategic planning working closely with the Planning Editor and Home and Foreign desks.
  • Keeping accurate logs of shared resources and equipment.
  • Regularly attend embassies to apply for visas for reporting teams.
  • Coordinate the assignment of UK-based camera crews and newsgathering staff.
  • Booking studio and satellites for package feeds, guests and live reports.
  • Dealing with callers to the newsdesk.
  • Logging pictures.
  • Being aware of copyright and access information on footage and stills.
  • Researching, locating and negotiating the acquisition of stills and video material within budget.
  • Pursue and liaise with potential guests or contributors, negotiating fees within budget.
  • Monitor foreign news agency feeds, book studios, guests, feeds and fixers outsider the UK.
  • Acting as a Gallery PA on the 3-minute noon bulletin each day.

The Ideal Candidate

Key Experience, Abilties, & Qualifications:
  • An experienced television professional with good working knowledge of newsroom operations.
  • Good communicator able to use initiative and make crucial decisions quickly.
  • Ability to work calmly under sometimes intense pressure.
  • Good organisational skills, coupled with the ability to multi-task, while retaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to anticipate problems, source solutions and trouble shoot.
  • A good working knowledge of UK geography, particularly London and its major government offices and courts.
  • Flexible worker with a positive approach to problem-solving.
  • A genuine interest in, and knowledge of, the news agenda.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to deal with a broad range of people.
  • Good knowledge of Ofcom regulations and the ITN compliance manual
  • Awareness of Health and Safety requirements and experience in preparing Risk Assessments.
  • Awareness and understanding of the financial implications of all decision making.
